Factors associated with the cognitive impairment among Korean older inpatients

Abstract

|
Background : Elderly dementia has been major neuropsychiatric disorder in recent years with the growing of the aged population. This study designed to evaluate associated factor with the cognitive impairment and help understanding recent trends of eldery dementia and its effective management.
Methods : This study was done via direct interview and chart review with 200 aged patients over 65 who are in an university hospital from December 1997 to March 1999. We analyzed the effect of socio-demographic factors, life styles and geriatric factors by Korean version of Mini-Mental State examination.
Results : The subjects consisted of 105 men(52.5%) and 95 women (47.5%). The rate of nonnal cognitive function was 59.5%, the rate of mild impairment was 30.0% and the rate of severe impairment was 10.5%. Chisquare analysis showed that the variables such as age(P<0.05), education(P<0.001), marital status(P<0.05), exercise(P<0.05), Basic Activities of Daily Living(ADL, P<0.001 ), Mini-Nu¥ðition Assessment(¥í1NA, P
Conclusions : In the elderly, lower educational level and ADL dependence were associated with cognitive
impairment. Further study is required to know other factors influencing on cognitive impaµûnent of the elderly.
